Chelsea and Westminster Tank

About This Aquarium

This aquarium is a tropical freshwater system, not to be confused with a marine (saltwater) or cold-water tank. While many people naturally associate fish tanks with the sea, the species living here are freshwater fish and would not survive in saltwater conditions.

The system includes a sump filtration unit, which is discreetly housed in the cabinet beneath the tank. A sump is an additional filtration tank that increases overall water volume, improves water quality, and keeps equipment hidden from view. Combined, the display tank and sump hold an impressive 2,245 litres of water, creating a stable and healthy environment for the fish.

The Fish You See

This aquarium is home to a vibrant community of African Cichlids, specifically Malawi cichlids. Most are Mbuna, with a few Peacock cichlids mixed in. In the wild, these fish originate from Lake Malawi in East Africa, where they inhabit rocky shorelines rather than open water.

These species are perfectly suited to freshwater conditions and carefully controlled water parameters. Temperature, filtration, and water chemistry are all monitored to ensure the fish remain healthy and stress-free.

Why Is That Catfish Swimming Upside Down?

You may notice our catfish swimming upside down. This often raises concern, but there is no need to worry.

These are Upside-Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris), a species that naturally swims inverted. Unlike many fish, upside-down swimming is completely normal behaviour for them.

The two catfish in this tank are affectionately named Jack (the larger fish) and Jill (the smaller one). Both are healthy, settled, and behaving exactly as they should.

Why Are There No Live Plants?

You’ll notice that this aquarium does not contain real aquatic plants. This is a deliberate choice.

Malawi cichlids are known for their tendency to nibble and uproot plants. Live plants would quickly be damaged, potentially breaking apart and interfering with the filtration system. To protect water quality and fish health, we only use décor and materials that are completely safe for the system.

The wellbeing of the fish always comes first.

Ongoing Care & Maintenance

This aquarium is professionally maintained by our team here at AQUAtechniques every two weeks. During these visits, we carry out water testing, cleaning, equipment checks, and general health observations to keep the system looking pristine and functioning perfectly.

The tank is also fitted with two automatic feeders, hidden above the aquarium. These feed the fish twice daily, ensuring consistent nutrition between maintenance visits.

So while you may not see us here every day, rest assured the fish are well cared for at all times.
